Course Details

The aim of the Operatives Signing Lighting and Guarding Course is to provide the delegates with a knowledge and understanding of the legal requirements, so they can follow the procedures for setting out the Signs and Guarding of an Excavation on the Highway.

  • New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 – Chapter 8.
  • Review of the Codes of Practice.
  • Drawing site plans.
  • Notices required by Local Authorities.
  • Site surveys.
  • Code of Practice – Safety at Street Works and Road Works.
  • An introduction to the use of vehicle-actuated portable traffic signals.
  • Practical – Signing, Lighting and Guarding.

The Supervisor Signing Lighting and Guarding Course ensures that the delegates are aware of the procedures and legal requirements when signing and guarding excavation works on the Highway. Supervisors will monitor the activity, assess the work undertaken, and compile a report.

Assessment for this unit consists of practical observations and a short online exam for the unit.

Who Should Attend
We recommend that all personnel engaged in road works attend this course. It is recommended that all Supervisors who are responsible for Operatives setting up safe road works, before and during excavation work attend this course.
